As an experiment, though, I tried touching the various keys and the keyboard appeared to be working. I tried troubleshooting with no success, and found out that Microsoft does not provide drivers for this keyboard on their web site. When I did this, the Device Manager said it was downloading and installing files, and then it vanished and the Mouse and Keyboard Center told me that I had no Microsoft devices connected. It did not install automatically I had to call up the Mouse and Keyboard Center. However, installation on the netbook was somewhat less than successful. To install the keyboard, I thought that all I had to do was find space for it (that was the hardest part) 🙂 then plug in the wireless dongle. Installing the Microsoft Sculpt Comfort in Windows 8 I'll talk about these items in a moment as well. It was more than I needed. You can also see the little feet that flip out to raise the front edge of the keyboard, and a switch with icons that make it look like it's used to lock and unlock the keyboard. Karabiner is a powerful utility for the Mac that allows a wide variety of keyboard mapping. If you need other keys mapped differently on this keyboard, there is another option. This saved the day with properly mapping the command key. Click OK and everything should work as expected. Option becomes Command and Command switches to Option.

The easy fix is to swap the two keys in the modifier. The Mac is recognizing the Alt key as the Option key. Notice the Option Key and Command Key defaults. Go to System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Modifier Keys…

The Microsoft Ergonomic keyboard has the Alt key in that location. This means the Command key is not to the left of the space bar as Mac people expect. One annoyance when using many keyboards is the fact that they are setup for Windows operation system and not macOS. I’ve seen some other customizable keyboards in the range of $350 but I haven’t found the large price tag necessary. Why? Because it’s a tradeoff between being ergonomic and being inexpensive. I keep coming back to the Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard to on macOS. I still love this keyboard but I was starting to have pain in my forearms after a long day of typing. One of my favorites is still the CODE Keyboard, which I wrote about before. I’ve been through a fair number of keyboards over the years, some expensive and some not.
